About Me
Im tied to two institutions, the Department of Technology Art and New Media at Gotland University in Sweden, where I have a doctoral studentship, and to the School of Computing at the University of Teesside in England, which is the examining institution for my PHD work. Currently I am a visiting scholar at the Expressive Intelligence studio at UC Santa Cruz. My primary research focus is story construction, characterization and identity in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). My thesis is that deeper characterization, or more elaborate identity development of player characters, is key for achieving even more meaningful play experiences in virtual game worlds. As an experiment I implement a software module that I call the Mind Module, which is architecture for semi-autonomous expressive avatars. Imagine that you, when you play an MMORPG, not only get a virtual body, but also a virtual mind. I do my research in the field of computing science, in the areas of virtual humans, believable agents and expressive artificial intelligence.
